With the announcement of our new “Trendspotter” partnership with Cosentino, we’ll have the opportunity to share all the enw finds with you… here’s the scoop!

SILESTONE TRENDSPOTTERS UNCOVER LATEST DESIGN TRENDS AT DWELL ON DESIGN

Three Leading Designers Named the 2013 Trendspotters

NEW YORK, NY (JUNE 2013) – Silestone (www.silestoneusa.com), a world leader in natural quartz surfacing, will re-ignite its popular Trendspotters program at Dwell on Design, America’s largest modern design event, which takes place June 21-23 in Los Angeles. This year, three new leading designers from across the country will become the 2013 Silestone Trendspotters — on the hunt for the latest products, design innovation and trends.

From inspiring color to creative patterns and innovative textures, together the Silestone Trendspotters will utilize their collective experience and keen eye for great design to instantly report on emerging trends and innovative products at Dwell on Design through their own blogs and social media channels as well as the Silestone digital platforms, using the hashtag #SilestoneTrends. The up-to-the-minute insight will allow other architects and designers who can’t attend to stay informed on the newest products and trends for their design projects. Additionally, consumers and design enthusiasts can get a sneak peak and join in the design conversation on the SilestoneTrendspotters.com where all #SilestoneTrends updates and insights will appear before, during and after Dwell on Design.

Each trip to New York proves to be a combination of old favorites and new finds. This trip we go a little “Kim-ye” staying at the Gansevoort and trying Anthony Boudain’s digs for dinner. At the same time, we just can’t resist Madison Avenue inspiration, a C.Wonder Shopping spree and a small plate and cocktail at Gramercy Tavern!

STAY: Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC

Gansevoort Park Avenue offers downtown edge with an uptown sensibility. Boasting 249 luxury rooms and remarkable suites, most with lofty ceilings, Juliet balconies, and five fixture bathrooms – the property perched on the corner of 29th Street and Park Avenue couldn’t be more centrally located. A three-story atrium lobby showcases striking herringbone granite floors, an oversized fireplace, and dramatic aubergine chandeliers.

In addition to the signature rooftop pool, ideal for sunbathing and city-escape daydreaming, Gansevoort Park Avenue also offers a bi-level rooftop bar + lounge, an outpost of the West Village’s favorite upscale sport’s bar Windsor, The One Group’s Ristorante Asellina – a 10,000 square foot trattoria offering Italian-inspired fare, an exhale Spa complete with transformational healing therapies and yoga classes, Cutler salon, a state-of-the-art gym and more. Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC is ideally located in Manhattan’s NoMad district, just steps away from Broadway shows in Times Square, beautiful urban gardens in Gramercy Park, fine dining around Madison Square Park and shopping in Union Square.

DINE: Brasserie Les Halles

Brasserie Les Halles is the home base of Chef-at-large Anthony Bourdain, author of the best selling Kitchen Confidential and host of the TV Show, No Reservations. Bustling and lively, Brasserie Les Halles is a typical Parisian brasserie serving fresh and simple dishes of France’s everyday cuisine. For centuries, the old market district of Paris, Les Halles, fed people from all walks of life with food stalls, restaurants, brasseries, bistros and cafes, open at all times day and night. For a simple, but delicious dinner under $35 at Les Halles, go in for the fabulous Les Halles Cocktail made from St.Germain, Club Soda and Champagne {not to mention its delivered in the most adorable beeker} and the Steak, Frites, Salade.

Gramercy Tavern

One of America’s most beloved restaurants, Gramercy Tavern has welcomed guests for close to two decades to enjoy seasonal American cuisine, warm hospitality and unparalleled service. The restaurant is perennially ranked at the top of Zagat Survey’s ‘Most Popular’ list, and has garnered eight James Beard Awards including ‘Outstanding Restaurant’ and ‘Best Chef: NYC’. Chef Michael Anthony’s highly seasonal menu consists of elegant dishes with a rustic influence that showcase the restaurant’s relationships with local farms and purveyors.

The Main Dining Room serves prix-fixe menus starting at $92 for dinner and an a la carte menu for lunch, and accepts reservations 28 days in advance. The more casual Tavern serves an a la carte menu centered around the wood burning grill, and welcomes guests on a walk-in basis. The restaurant also features an acclaimed wine list, and thoughtfully selected beer and cocktail offerings.

SHOP: C.Wonder

C. Wonder is a shopping destination that transports women into a world of luxury and surprises. Created to deliver brightness to every corner of life, C. Wonder offers an entirely new retail experience: clothing, accessories and home decor products of outstanding quality and astonishing value in a setting that excites and inspires.

C. Wonder offers a diverse assortment of beautiful, versatile and spirited products that pair timeless design elements with fresh twists, such as unexpected colors and patterned linings. They edit their collection to offer solely must-haves — key items to enhance a room, refresh a wardrobe or inspire a memorable experience. With breathtaking, always-changing window and floor displays, gorgeous decorative schemes inspired by fine homes, and intriguing surprises to uncover {visit their fitting room!}, C. Wonder is an absolute delight to visit!

J. McLaughlin: The J.McLaughlin sensibility is influenced by where their customer lives and plays. Their stores are located and designed with that in mind. Be it on Madison Avenue or Main Street, each store makes its presence known with a whisper not a shout. Residential in feel and reflective of the surroundings, the stores evoke a comfortable sense of always having been there. While at the same time, their inimitable bespoke {no two stores are alike} décor encourages their customers to linger awhile and browse. That same sense of familiarity and invitation to spend some time exploring extends to J.McLaughlin.

When it comes to the clothing, the palette is grounded by trademark J.McLaughlin blue with its complements filtered through a very particular lens. Pattern {be it print, embroidered or woven} is equally sophisticated with signature J.McLaughlin character: influenced by the past, yet refreshed with a keen eye for proportion… and an occasional healthy dollop of wit.

TOUR: Whitney Museum

As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of twentieth-century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collection—arguably the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the world—is the Museum’s key resource. The Museum’s signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country’s leading survey of the most recent developments in American art.

Central Park

A visual masterpiece created by landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux, Central Park has gone through major developments and restoration over time to carry on its initial purpose as an open-air oasis for a metropolitan city. No matter the season or reason for your visit, this national historic landmark is a setting for enjoying many pursuits: bicycle riding, strolling, rollerblading, ice-skating, picnicking, and much more!

Last weekend, in preparation for our backyard wedding, a team of gal-pals kidnapped me for a Napa daytrip aka my “Bachelorette Party”! Thankfully, these ladies have amazing taste—see where we landed for inspiration for your next Napa visit.

SolBar at Solage: The best ingredients. The right techniques. The perfect presentation. These are the guiding principles of the Solbar kitchen. The Michelin Star-rated Solbar is full of creative California Soul Food inspired by the freshest locally grown, seasonal ingredients. The warm interior features a woodsy-chic vibe inside overlooking a spacious outdoor patio where you can dine and unwind by the firepit while taking in spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Executive Chef Brandon Sharp and his team update the Solbar menus daily. Brandon joined Solage Calistoga after honing his craft at some of the most recognized restaurants in the country. Most recently, he was Sous Chef at the five-star Gary Danko in San Francisco. Prior to that, he was Chef de Cuisine at Restaurant August, a New Orleans culinary institution, and Chef de Partie alongside Thomas Keller at the world-renowned French Laundry in Napa Valley.

Kelly Fleming Wines: Employing a diverse skill set acquired over many years of serving as a valued partner, a devoted mother and supportive community member, Kelly Fleming set out on a path to build something of quality for herself and her children — something which, by design, would last.

Kelly Fleming Wines was launched in 1998 with the purchase of a 300 acre parcel of land on Pickett Road in the Napa Valley sub-appellation of Calistoga. There was never any question of what to plant here. This is Cabernet Sauvignon country. The first vines, a total of eight acres, went into the ground in 1999. Six years later another four were developed, with no plans for additional plantings on this largely wild tract of land. The site, which was selected for its soils, is nestled between two scenic canyons on a craggy slope at the northern end of the property the land had no history of vines, but neighbors include Araujo, Frediani, Hundred Acre, Kenefick, and Fisher.

The first vintage (2002) was released in the spring of 2005 and in June of 2010 Kelly Fleming Wines celebrated the opening of an estate winery facility on Pickett Road, adjacent to the 12 acre vineyard. Kelly’s exquisite taste and eye for detail can be seen in every aspect of the company she has built from the ground up, personally overseeing everything from site selection and facility design, to label development, farming decisions, and use permits.

Firmly committed to conscientious land stewardship, they practice sustainable farming, utilizing the best viticultural management practices. Only a small percentage of the land is committed to vines in order to preserve the pristine nature of this beautiful setting with its seasonal creeks, tree-covered hills and abundant wildlife. Kelly Fleming Wines is more than just another label — it’s heritage in the making.

It’s fair to say that we love the individual pieces, but the combination of them makes us adore this bold color palette! Clean and sleek makes a statement in this show-stopping kitchen. Brass has been on our trends list since the beginning of the year and we still can’t get enough. Add the latest trend in wallpaper with a bold black and white pattern to compliment the stunning Cosentino countertop color, and you’ve got a style that makes us weak in the knees.

Nothing starts my day like a great cup of coffee in downtown Chico. The old brick buildings and college town flavor adds to the great taste of an Americano.

Back at home, the Chihuahuas get their breakfast too. I start my morning stretches to get my blood pumping and then I’m ready to rock and roll! Foxy is too… once I’m seated at my desk, she barrels down the hallway and jumps on my lap to begin a full day’s work.

Kerrie and I met with a great new customer yesterday and we begin to assist in their re-model. After we take photos and understand their style, design goals and dreams, we get to work selecting the perfect pieces. Not only do we search for products that match their style, being made in America is an important factor too!

Wow! It’s lunch time already?! The morning flew by and it is time to have a quick veggie soup. Time flies when you’re having fun!

During the afternoon, I’m able to select the remaining items for this remodel. I’m looking forward to tomorrow when I will be at the lab so that I can collaborate with the team. Then we can finalize the appropriate fabrics for pillows, upholstery, rugs and window coverings. It is so much fun to see a design come to life!

After printing today’s work, I have time to squeeze in a quick walk with the dogs before dinner. It’s so beautiful up here! It’s the perfect temperature and all of the wildflowers are blooming.

Feeling refreshed, it’s time for dinner- something my husband and I enjoy preparing together. Jason is a BBQ expert and tonight he is grilling Halibut. Dinner is always better with a great glass of red wine… and I usually save room for a little desert, too!

We have a little bit of time to watch a little TV (isn’t The Voice great?!) and to read for a few minutes before turning in for the night. Time to rest up! There’s another full day of fun tomorrow!

Once out of style, wall covering has definitely made a comeback. And it’s nothing like what you remember seeing on grandma’s walls.

The 1960s and 1970s touted bright geometric patterned papers with pop-art designs. The mid-’80s through the 90′s ditched the idea of wall covering and instead, homeowners stripped their walls of it, creating a more minimalist aesthetic. While seagrass has hung in there through the years, a much bolder approach has entered the scene today.

While leading trends include murals, coverings with an aged elegance or gentle worn look, and textured looks, others are pushing the design envelope—adding graphic patterns and all sorts of tactile dimensions. In fact, most of our clients are asking for a bolder approach even in small spaces.

We love our client’s powder room that’s bursting with personality!

_____________________________________________

Add some pattern to your space, either in bold graphics or a subtle tone on tone.

_______________________________________

Still light and bright, this trellis design adds pattern and interest to this white space.

_______________________________________

How cute is this for a kid’s room or playroom?! We totally agree, it’s a winner!

Let loose and have a little pattern play in your space!

La Tavola is becoming one of the most well-known and respected fine linen companies nationwide. With locations in Sacramento, Napa, Newport Beach, New York and more, they maintain an impressive repertoire of spectacular linens, creating memorable events for our clients, families and friends.

Recently, our dear friend and super-star caterer, Diana Burke of Simple Pleasures, invited us to La Tavola’s 2013 launch party where not only the latest linens and table tops elements were featured, but fabulous flowers, food, dessert and drink were shared from the following gurus: The Fremont Diner, Sweets by Crisp Bake Shop, Flowers by Louloudi Design.

An array of pink flowers create a beautiful centerpiece and we love the pink, gray and white stripe table covering!

Purples and greens are right on trend with this geometric cloth.

Who can resist these beautiful blues and whites?!

Such a happy and brilliant orange arrangement!

We loved all the examples of menus and table settings throughout the evening. The food was absolutely delicious and was such a fun atmosphere! La Tavola has something for every style and occasion.

It may be just south of the border, but we felt world’s away from our daily routine… and completely spoiled! The One&Only Palmilla in Los Cabos, Mexico gave us just what we needed- beautiful beaches, delicious dining, and time to get away and relax together. That was by far the most important part, but the sand and sunshine were welcome too!

STAY: One&Only, Palmilla, Los Cabos is absolutely stunning and refreshing! The luxurious resort at the tip of the Baja Peninsula is a beautiful oasis nestled away between the ocean and mountainous desert in an idyllic paradise. With exquisite dining, a relaxing spa, and a manicured golf course, we couldn’t help but fall in love.

DINE: Agua Mexiterranean Restaurant boasts a unique blend of Mediterranean and Mexican dining, situated perfectly atop a bluff overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Take a seat next to the elegant fountains in the courtyard, or dine beside the fireplace indoors as musicians gently serenade the night away.

Agua Bar

Market Fine Dining Restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten: The restaurant touts, “Legendary restaurateur and Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten presents a unique dining concept in Market, his first outpost South of the Border. In understated elegance, Market features Euro-Asian cuisine with Mexican inspirations along with the country’s most complete wine list.”

THE UNEXPECTED: Completely service oriented, The Palmilla spirit is unmatched. It did not take us long to notice that everyone who worked at the resort would bow slightly, put their fist over their heart, and express a Spanish greeting like “hola” or “buenos dias” as we walked by. Without fail, every associate who caught our eye made this gesture, even if they were in the middle of gardening or a conversation.

After only a few days, we found ourselves bowing and giving the same gesture to others. This gesture came from the custom of a small Mexican Indian tribe who developed this symbol to show that their welcome was truly “from the heart.” The general manager of the resort learned of this unique symbol of hospitality and made it a standard practice for all employees. He proudly stated that no other resort, hotel, or business in the world uses this greeting.

There was so much beauty here, we will let our photos do the talking…

Dwell on Design is just a couple months away and we couldn’t be more excited! This year, Dwell and ASID have partnered for the annual Conference that will host over 30,000 attendees, making it Dwell’s premiere design and exhibition event of the year. The Los Angeles Convention Center will be filled with the latest and greatest in design innovations and services, as well as over 200 thought leaders in the industry speaking on various topics.

As part of Dwell on Design’s media collaboration for the event, they held a “Pin-spiration” Competition for all ASID designers to enter. Using Sherwin-Williams paint and Sunbrella fabrics, designers were to showcase their personal design philosophy through color. The ten winning designers will participate at the Pinterest Pavilion throughout the entire conference as well as receive VIP tickets and a ‘Meet and Greet’ with the Dwell editors. KKDL is proud to announce that we were officially selected as a winner!

{our winning Pinterest board}

We used our logo and branding colors for our inspiration. We love the mix of purple, grays, and whites, mixed with a pop of green. It’s sophisticated and fun at the same time- what do you think?

In 1948, Edith Heath {1911–2005} founded Heath Ceramics after her solo pottery show at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor. She was a talented ceramicist with a great respect for craft and material, not to mention a strong point of view on the product that her company would make — simple, good things for good people. Edith’s passion for ceramics led to advances in clay and glaze development, which secured Heath its unique place in ceramics history. Her pieces were designed to enjoy a single kiln firing, at a lower than normal temperature, thus saving energy, while remarkably producing a durable and non-porous product. This Great Depression mentality motivated her to design and produced long-lasting products with integrity, in a responsible manner.

On a visit to the Ferry Building in San Francisco, we caught up with Catherine Bailey, who is now at Heath Ceramics’ helm alongside Robin Petravic. Today, they lead Heath Ceramics by incorporating design-led manufacturing principles and believing that responsible business practices lead to long-term business viability. Cathy sets the direction and creative vision as Creative Director—see what eco-chic gems she has to share via her quotes below and the video of our interview together.

- “{Heath Ceramics} creates timeless shapes and forms and this inspired us. It started with Edith Heath who was a very thoughtful designer.”

- “Edith believed in incredibly good quality things that last a long time. We still strongly believe in that today.”

- “Edith’s Bauhaus background is relevant today. The honesty in materials and that quality—there are no of bells and whistles here—just a beautiful, functional nature.”

- “We work on projects where we are part of the architecture. We get to work with architects and create with them.”

- “Having manufacturing right here where we are designing creates a lighter footprint.”

- “People can buy our product and build upon it. Creating classic shapes and colors allows the you to have the product for a long time, have it grow with you and pass on to the next generation.”
