Three Leading Designers Named the 2013 Trendspotters

The up-to-the-minute insight will allow other architects and designers who can’t attend to stay informed on the newest products and trends for their design projects. Additionally, consumers and design enthusiasts can get a sneak peak and join in the design conversation on the SilestoneTrendspotters.com where all #SilestoneTrends updates and insights will appear before, during and after Dwell on Design.

This year’s Silestone Trendspotters are renowned designers with distinct and compelling design aesthetics from three important U.S. markets: Chicago, Dallas and Sacramento.

• Julia Buckingham Edelmann founded the full-service interior design firm Buckingham Interiors + Design, specializing in historic restorations and homebuilding in Chicago. Additionally, Julia runs Buckingham I+D Showroom, which showcases curated collections of local and international fine art, furniture, lighting, unique artifacts and accessories. Julia also serves as the Chicago interior design blogger for Material Girls and is a 1^stDibs dealer. A former antiques dealer, Julia designs interior environments, integrating antiques and modern furnishings which highlight her trademarked design direction: Modernique® aesthetic. Julia’s work has been featured in House Beautiful, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Better Homes + Gardens, Chicago Homes + Gardens, HGTV.com and numerous online outlets.

• Abbe Fenimore is the Dallas-based designer behind Studio Ten 25, combines vibrant colors, rich textures and her own special unique aesthetic to create stunning commercial and residential spaces. She also founded Shop Ten 25, a well-curated online store featuring accessories and designer furniture that she often uses in her own design and home. Named one of Dallas’ Best Interior Designers in 2012 and 2013 by D Home, Abbe also expresses her design and style inspirations though Blog Ten 25.  Abbe’s work has been featured in DHome, Cottages & Bungalows, Modern Luxury, Dallas Morning News, D Magazine and numerous blogs.

• Kerrie Kelly is an award-winning interior designer and author who founded Sacramento-based Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in 1995. She has authored two books: Home Décor: A Sunset Design Guide, and the newly released My Interior Design Kit. In addition to being a certified interior designer, she’s also earned an MBA and is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and shares her design inspiration on her blog, Everyone Deserves Great Design. Kerrie’s work has been featured on several HGTV shows, including Room Crashers, Bath Crashers and House Crashers, Dwell, Elle Décor, Redbook and Colorado Homes & Lifestyle, Sacramento Magazine and numerous blogs.

Kelly Fleming Wines: Employing a diverse skill set acquired over many years of serving as a valued partner, a devoted mother and supportive community member, Kelly Fleming set out on a path to build something of quality for herself and her children — something which, by design, would last.

Kelly Fleming Wines was launched in 1998 with the purchase of a 300 acre parcel of land on Pickett Road in the Napa Valley sub-appellation of Calistoga. There was never any question of what to plant here. This is Cabernet Sauvignon country. The first vines, a total of eight acres, went into the ground in 1999. Six years later another four were developed, with no plans for additional plantings on this largely wild tract of land. The site, which was selected for its soils, is nestled between two scenic canyons on a craggy slope at the northern end of the property the land had no history of vines, but neighbors include Araujo, Frediani, Hundred Acre, Kenefick, and Fisher.

The first vintage (2002) was released in the spring of 2005 and in June of 2010 Kelly Fleming Wines celebrated the opening of an estate winery facility on Pickett Road, adjacent to the 12 acre vineyard. Kelly’s exquisite taste and eye for detail can be seen in every aspect of the company she has built from the ground up, personally overseeing everything from site selection and facility design, to label development, farming decisions, and use permits.

Firmly committed to conscientious land stewardship, they practice sustainable farming, utilizing the best viticultural management practices. Only a small percentage of the land is committed to vines in order to preserve the pristine nature of this beautiful setting with its seasonal creeks, tree-covered hills and abundant wildlife. Kelly Fleming Wines is more than just another label — it’s heritage in the making.

Back at home, the Chihuahuas get their breakfast too. I start my morning stretches to get my blood pumping and then I’m ready to rock and roll! Foxy is too… once I’m seated at my desk, she barrels down the hallway and jumps on my lap to begin a full day’s work.

Kerrie and I met with a great new customer yesterday and we begin to assist in their re-model. After we take photos and understand their style, design goals and dreams, we get to work selecting the perfect pieces. Not only do we search for products that match their style, being made in America is an important factor too!

Wow! It’s lunch time already?! The morning flew by and it is time to have a quick veggie soup. Time flies when you’re having fun!

During the afternoon, I’m able to select the remaining items for this remodel. I’m looking forward to tomorrow when I will be at the lab so that I can collaborate with the team. Then we can finalize the appropriate fabrics for pillows, upholstery, rugs and window coverings. It is so much fun to see a design come to life!

After printing today’s work, I have time to squeeze in a quick walk with the dogs before dinner. It’s so beautiful up here! It’s the perfect temperature and all of the wildflowers are blooming.

Feeling refreshed, it’s time for dinner- something my husband and I enjoy preparing together.  Jason is a BBQ expert and tonight he is grilling Halibut. Dinner is always better with a great glass of red wine… and I usually save room for a little desert, too!

We have a little bit of time to watch a little TV (isn’t The Voice great?!) and to read for a few minutes before turning in for the night. Time to rest up! There’s another full day of fun tomorrow!

The 1960s and 1970s touted bright geometric patterned papers with pop-art designs. The mid-’80s through the 90′s ditched the idea of wall covering and instead, homeowners stripped their walls of it, creating a more minimalist aesthetic. While seagrass has hung in there through the years, a much bolder approach has entered the scene today.

While leading trends include murals, coverings with an aged elegance or gentle worn look, and textured looks, others are pushing the design envelope—adding graphic patterns and all sorts of tactile dimensions. In fact, most of our clients are asking for a bolder approach even in small spaces.

Recently, our dear friend and super-star caterer, Diana Burke of Simple Pleasures, invited us to La Tavola’s 2013 launch party where not only the latest linens and table tops elements were featured,  but fabulous flowers, food, dessert and drink were shared from the following gurus: The Fremont Diner, Sweets by Crisp Bake Shop, Flowers by Louloudi Design.

An array of pink flowers create a beautiful centerpiece and we love the pink, gray and white stripe table covering!

We loved all the examples of menus and table settings throughout the evening. The food was absolutely delicious and was such a fun atmosphere! La Tavola has something for every style and occasion.

DINE: Agua Mexiterranean Restaurant boasts a unique blend of Mediterranean and Mexican dining, situated perfectly atop a bluff overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Take a seat next to the elegant fountains in the courtyard, or dine beside the fireplace indoors as musicians gently serenade the night away.

Market Fine Dining Restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten: The restaurant touts, “Legendary restaurateur and Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten presents a unique dining concept in Market, his first outpost South of the Border. In understated elegance, Market features Euro-Asian cuisine with Mexican inspirations along with the country’s most complete wine list.”

THE UNEXPECTED: Completely service oriented, The Palmilla spirit is unmatched. It did not take us long to notice that everyone who worked at the resort would bow slightly, put their fist over their heart, and express a Spanish greeting like “hola” or “buenos dias” as we walked by. Without fail, every associate who caught our eye made this gesture, even if they were in the middle of gardening or a conversation.

After only a few days, we found ourselves bowing and giving the same gesture to others.  This gesture came from the custom of a small Mexican Indian tribe who developed this symbol to show that their welcome was truly “from the heart.” The general manager of the resort learned of this unique symbol of hospitality and made it a standard practice for all employees. He proudly stated that no other resort, hotel, or business in the world uses this greeting.

As part of Dwell on Design’s media collaboration for the event, they held a “Pin-spiration” Competition for all ASID designers to enter. Using Sherwin-Williams paint and Sunbrella fabrics, designers were to showcase their personal design philosophy through color. The ten winning designers will participate at the Pinterest Pavilion throughout the entire conference as well as receive VIP tickets and a ‘Meet and Greet’ with the Dwell editors. KKDL is proud to announce that we were officially selected as a winner!

We used our logo and branding colors for our inspiration. We love the mix of purple, grays, and whites, mixed with a pop of green. It’s sophisticated and fun at the same time- what do you think?

On a visit to the Ferry Building in San Francisco, we caught up with Catherine Bailey, who is now at Heath Ceramics’ helm alongside Robin Petravic. Today, they lead Heath Ceramics by incorporating design-led manufacturing principles and believing that responsible business practices lead to long-term business viability.
