Vitra Haus by Herzog & de Meuron

Vitra Haus, the new home of Vitra's Home Collection, has been covered widely by design media, and not in vain. It is a beautiful example of Jacques Herzog's and Pierre de Meuron's ability to take the ubiquitous stacked-houses concept and still make it look new, interesting and inviting.

Hidden SF Treasure: Da Flora Restaurant

I always love a great restaurant find--the kind that has no signage, eleven mis-matched tables and only local patrons. Da Flora in San Francisco is just this. The handwritten menu at North Beach's cozy Da Flora changes often, with one exception -- owner Flora Gaspar's "signature" sweet potato gnocchi.

Console Mirror by Front

It’s all about illusion. A doorway framing a round table - or a console table abutting a mirror? It’s definitely the latter of the two options, but looks like the former. Somewhat confusing or misleading? That’s the point.

Al Fresco: Christophe Mobile Kitchen On Wheels

Calanc’s La Plancha Sur Roulette Christophe (stateside, that’s “Christophe Mobile Kitchen On Wheels,” but the French makes it sound so much more refined). Billed as “the latest and greatest portable outdoor essential,” the “Christophe” is an attractive, compact, versatile, and relatively lightweight conduit into full-fledged gourmandism sans the familiar constraints of the kitchen.

Spring Splash: Color Bangle by Louis Vuitton

I often find that many of us fall into a rut of wearing the same pieces of jewelry—all of the time. Now, it is perfectly acceptable, and recommended, that you have your day-to-day staples—maybe a wedding ring, wrap bracelet or stud earrings—but it is equally vital to change it up! Liven your accessory collection with something vibrant and unexpected, like Louis Vuitton’s Metal Bracelets, and you will see what I mean.

Barcelona, Wish You Were Here!

When in Barcelona, you will want to check into one of the several new or refurbished and distinctively cool hotels that have opened there recently. Among them, W Barcelona, located on La Barceloneta and designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, and the swish apartment residences of El Palauet.

Matte Black is the New "Black"

A softer, less assuming black for a still-recovering economy is part of the 2010 palette. From Apple® iPhones to the Rolls Royce Phantom, matte black is everywhere. The finish gives black a warmer, more inviting look than its glossier, sharper counterpart.

Staple It: How to Upholster Walls

Much like upholstering a chair seat, this method uses staples to adhere fabric to the wall. This is the easiest approach for covering drywall. If you have plastered walls, you’ll need to attach lath strips to the wall first, so you can staple into the softer wood. For an extra plush look, cover your wall with batting before adding the fabric.

How to Pick the Perfect Lampshade

Picking the perfect shade is a lot like choosing the right jewelry - it has to fit the place and occasion, complement without overwhelming, and draw just enough attention to be noticed. And if you put it on and it doesn’t make your heart beat a little faster, keep looking. There’s something better.

Wash Your Cares Away

Many times a Designer's challenge is to render a strictly utilitarian device aesthetically pleasing. Not that the TV in the bathroom gag hasn’t been attempted before: Seura’s Television Mirrors are perhaps the best previous example of the re-location of this integral recreation, but this new version is more of an up-close-and-personal affair.

Reknit: What's Old is New Again

How many of us have old sweaters in storage or the back of our closets that never see the light of day? It is always cool to donate them to Goodwill or The Salvation Army, but if there is a particular knit you never wear and simply cannot bear to part with—maybe because it holds sentimental value or is your favorite color—why not turn it into something else? Like a scarf!

Color Wheel: Red

Zack Rosson, my lighting guru from Lumens Light+Living, responded, "Red is a primary color. How could it ever go out of style?" I would have to agree. I believe the trend and look is set when you choose what to pair with red rather than the color itself.
